Why Burlington Telecom

How is Burlington Telecom different from private providers like Comcast?

BT is a municipal telecommunications provider owned and operated by the City of Burlington.

When consumers are at the mercy of private carriers, network rollouts are often limited to only profitable, highly populated areas. As evidence of this, Vermont is currently ranked 47th among all states in availability of high-speed internet access. Building a statewide telecommunications network is a critical public issue, vital to Vermont’s economic future and our ability to remain competitive in a global economy. BT was created to level the playing field, and has since built a world-class Fiber-to-the-Home Network that delivers reliable services to the citizens of Burlington.

What is the advantage of community-owned telecommunications network?

Municipal ownership can provide profitable revenue streams to support a community’s fiscal health. BT provides services to the very people who own its infrastructure, and its sole mission is to serve Burlington citizens, not corporate interests.

Is the Burlington network fully complete?

BT has aggressively pursued the build-out of the City of Burlington and currently serves a vast majority of the service addresses in the city. Some of the sections remaining to be built contain ledge and rock, with roughly 50% located on private property, and these areas require additional resources to complete. We remain fully committed to building out the Burlington network in full, and will continue to communicate with our customers and the public as the time frame becomes more concrete.

Is BT going to expand into other areas in Vermont?

As the only “fiber-to-the-home” telecommunications network in the state, BT’s infrastructure is a tremendous asset to the people of Vermont. At a time when everyone recognizes the urgent need for broadband services, BT is prepared to work in cooperation with other Vermont communities to leverage this asset for the benefit of all. Expanding outside of city limits will also provide additional support for BT’s operations and will not change our dedication to completing the build-out in the city.

I live in Burlington and I don’t have service yet.  When can I get it?

We currently serve the vast majority of the service addresses in the city, and we are fully committed to our goal of 100 percent build-out. We will continue to communicate our progress, but cannot predict exactly when the network will be complete. Contact Us for more information and to see if your neighborhood is already connected.

Is BT going to build-out the network in other communities before completing the Burlington network?

Any network expansion to other Vermont communities will occur SIMULTANEOUSLY with the ongoing build-out to the remainder of the city. Build-out of the Burlington network will not be halted in any way by BT’s proposed expansion. In fact, it will accelerate the Burlington project by providing more funds to make it possible, while bringing affordable high-speed broadband access to other parts of the state that also need coverage.
